In rural Brazil’s farming communities, families face a complex set of challenges. Food security remains a constant concern, with many farmers struggling to earn enough from their land.
The problem goes deeper than just farming – it’s about creating an economy that makes forest preservation worthwhile.
Without financial resources or support, farmers find it difficult to maintain their land productively. This situation puts nearby forests at risk, as there’s little incentive to preserve trees when basic needs aren’t met.
Our Agroforestry Carbon project takes a practical approach to these challenges. We provide financial support to farmers for planting and maintaining trees on their land. This isn’t just about giving money – it’s about creating a system where protecting forests becomes economically viable.
By covering the costs of tree planting, we help farmers transition to more sustainable practices without risking their livelihoods.
The project works through a network of small farmers, reaching more families and encouraging agroforestry adoption. Each farmer signs a 20-year agreement not to cut down the trees. In return, they receive income from the trees’ products and harvests.
This long-term commitment ensures both environmental protection and economic stability. The trees are specifically chosen to be productive, providing regular income through fruits, nuts, and other forest products.
The project’s effects are visible in practical, everyday ways. As one farmer shares: “With Carbify’s help, I finished building a bathroom in my house. Their support made a real difference.” This simple statement shows how environmental protection can translate into real improvements in people’s lives.
Working alongside communities has proven essential to the project’s success. We recognize that small farmers face significant challenges – from weather problems to crop failures. The resources we provide help ease these difficulties, though we understand that lasting change requires long-term support.
As our local partner explains: “We believe in working alongside communities to value their best interests. It’s common for foreign capital to dictate rules without considering local contexts, but Carbify listens to what the community actually needs.”
While it’s too early to measure all long-term impacts, we’re seeing encouraging signs. The relationship between Carbify and the community is one of mutual benefit – farmers get support for sustainable practices, while forests are preserved. The project demonstrates how environmental protection can work when it aligns with community needs and provides tangible economic benefits.
Looking ahead, we expect this model to strengthen over time. As more farmers join the project and trees mature, the benefits to both the environment and community will grow. This approach shows how creating forest-based economies can lead to genuine environmental protection while supporting local livelihoods.
